Jam Chart for Divided Sky (34 entries)

Date City Timing Notes
1987-05-11 Burlington, VT 4:26 First known performance. All performances until 9/24/88 were short, about 4 1/2 minutes long, and contained most, but not all of the composed portions of the complete version.
1988-09-24 Amherst, MA 13:08 First full length version is a real standout. Trey teases the "Popeye" theme several times and his trilling throughout is amazing. It's also one of the longest jam segments until late 1994.
1989-04-27 Durham, NH 12:32 Machine Gun Trey aptly named. Great early and seriously rocking version.
1990-09-15 Keene, NH 13:16 In addition to the predictably fleet fingered Trey, Page rocks the B-3 for a long stretch and Fish hammers away on the drums.
1991-11-22 Portland, ME 13:30 Unusually long jam for this period. Trey is absolutely on fire in this one.
1992-11-27 Port Chester, NY 16:45 Outstanding version, an anomaly that jams far longer than any other performance prior to 10/31/94. Of course Trey is blistering here, but this also has a distinctly quiet, settled section that anticipates the band's less rocking, more restrained sound in the later '90s.
1993-02-20 Atlanta, GA 13:01 Fish rules the court here, and Trey is predictably fleet fingered in this powerhouse version.
1993-08-14 Tinley Park, IL 14:37 Despite being consistently well played, "Divided" was largely kept on a short leash throughout 1993. This excellent version is an exception.
1993-08-17 Kansas City, KS 14:17 Within the context of "Divided Sky," this has a very improvisational, well-played jam with excellent Fish and Trey.
1994-06-18 Chicago, IL 14:39 Fish handily takes first prize in this rhythmically (and otherwise) intense ripper from a hot show.
1994-07-02 Holmdel, NJ 15:16 A classically high power '94 version which wastes no time kicking into gear, includes great trilling and rapid-fire action from Trey, strong B-3 from Page near the ending, and thunderous Fish throughout.
1994-10-27 Charlottesville, VA 16:00 Quite possibly the most dynamic, super-charged version ever performed, which also includes an All Fall Down signal during the "pause." Must-hear material.
1994-10-31 Glens Falls, NY 16:28 Superlative, epic, one for the ages. Hard rocking yet played with extreme precision, this version reflects the band at the top of its game.
1995-06-17 Bristow, VA 16:39 1995 was a very strong year for "Divided Sky." This show opening, sunset version is a case in point.
1995-07-02 Fayston, VT 17:17 Fantastic workhorse version from the slopes of Sugarbush Mountain in Vermont. Machine Gun Trey burns through the ammo in this one.
1995-10-11 Chandler, AZ 16:05 A somewhat unusual approach by Trey makes for a different and interesting version. Being 1995, it's also very well played.
1995-10-31 Rosemont, IL 15:06 An inspired version with some really beautiful moments before Trey leads the boys into an overdrive finale.
1995-11-09 Atlanta, GA 16:56 Astounding collective musicianship here. In this scorcher, the band nimbly stretches the chord structure, phrasing, and timing in such a deft manner that it's almost imperceptible.
1996-08-13 Noblesville, IN 16:10 Majestic and grand. Right up there with 10/31/94, just a different style and vibe. If you are a fan of Page's piano playing, this one is for you.
1996-11-23 Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada 14:01 A magnificent and triumphant version. Check out the superb "Hood" from this show while you're at it.
1997-08-02 George, WA 15:18 Only played 4 times in 1997, Trey's restraint in this soaring, sunset version from the Gorge (released on Live Bait Vol. 4) allows the others to shine, and being that it's 1997, Mike surely does.
1998-07-17 George, WA 17:11 On the heels of a show opening "Makisupa" and chart versions of "Ya Mar" and "Gumbo," and notwithstanding 8/2/97, this is The Epic Gorge Sunset Version. Just wish KS would release the sbd of this whole excellent show (also with a stellar "2001" and "Mike's Groove" in Set II)!
1998-08-15 Limestone, ME 16:34 Musically, 1998 falls somewhere between the crisp, hard rocking sound of the mid-90's and the subtle, layered grooves of 1999 and 2000. This excellent version provides glimpses of both.
2000-07-07 Burgettstown, PA 16:32 A completely different style of play, reflecting the sound of 1999 and 2000. Anything but hard rocking, it's graceful, emotive music, with Mike, Page and Fish leading the way.
2003-07-10 Mountain View, CA 18:59 An easy going summer version breaks into an unusual groove at about 16:00 with "DEG"-like jamming for a couple of minutes, before returning to "Divided" to conclude.
2003-12-29 Miami, FL 17:43 A moving version with some great, quieter moments before cycling up for a big conclusion.
2011-01-01 New York, NY 14:54 An inspired, full power yet nimbly executed version. Like a great "Slave" or "Hood," you can really hear Trey and the band pour their hearts into this one.
2011-06-07 Mansfield, MA 16:22 Determined to make up for some serious flubs in the 5/31/11 version, Trey in this instance introduces some very cool and very different staccato playing during the jam section.
2012-12-30 New York, NY 15:55 Minor flubs in the composed section notwithstanding, a very good jam segment, and long for 3.0.
2013-07-17 Alpharetta, GA 15:19 Some very delicate playing by Trey and great teaming with Page in this solid, summertime version.
2013-08-04 San Francisco, CA 16:20 Fish is the star here, adding just the right forcefullness to the percussion as the jam intensity grows.
2013-10-29 Reading, PA 15:38 The jam has a really nice and gentle beginning, with almost a late-'90s vibe, then builds to a solid peak.
2015-01-03 Miami, FL 15:29 An inspired jam which features strong soloing by Trey, great teaming with Page, and very solid Fish, whose fills and creative accents gradually power up as the jam intensity rises.
2017-07-28 New York, NY 16:25 After a sluggish start, Trey settles in nicely, employing huge, warm blasts of sustain. Play cools to enter a quiet passage rich with texture and great full-band play, before Trey, toying with the song's familiar meter, altering his phrasing and timing - akin to 11/9/95's sublime version - works the jam to an inspired conclusion.
Jam chart versions are selected because of improvisational and other characteristics that distinguish these from typical versions of the song.
The jam chart team has highlighted some versions with a yellow background; these are the versions the team believes to be especially improvisational, or otherwise notable.
